"5th International Symposium on UFOs and Other Related Phenomena -- May 1997"

"If I become President, I'll make every piece of information this country has
about UFO sightings available to the public and scientists. I am convinced
that UFOs exist because I have seen one."
President Jimmy Carter.

SAN MARINO--May 1997
San Marino remains one of the few national governments to recognize the existance UFOs. Spending a considerable amount of their national budget, they host an annual International Symposium on UFOs and Related Phenomena. The stamp pictured above, commemorates the 5th symposium which took place in June of 1997.

Ufo, standing for Unidentified Flying Object, was the acronym coined by the US air Force about thirty years ago and now used universally to describe one of the most intriguing phenomenon that celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year, since the first documented modern sighting took place on 24 June 1947.
Even though many sightings during these fifty years can be put down to optical illusions produced by refraction or the lionisation of the atmosphere, or to weather balloons or to globe lightning, not to mention mass hallucination or hoaxes perpetrated by people seeking to get their names in the newspapers, in many other cases documentary proof exists - supported by the testimony of qualified observers, radar traces and filmed records - that there is no logical explanation other than the hypothetical presence of objects coming from space.
Out of this comes the theme "UFO, the reality behind the phenomenon : alien intervention ?" which is the basis for the 5th Inernational Symposium on Unidentified Flying Objects and associated Phenomena which is being held in San Marino from 6th to 8th June 1997 with the participation of researchers, scientists and eye-witnesses from all over the world, and which will be held alongside an international ufological photographic exhibition and other interesting activities.
The curiosity and sense of wonder which mankind has always shown towards the universe and its mysteries, almost in waiting for those Close Encounters of the Third Kind which Steven Spielberg described in his now classic film, have been visualised in a poetically direct manner through the pencil of Franco Filanci, in a simple but impressive postage stamp that goes well beyond the conventional signs, symbols and factual images that by themselves cannot illuminate this ancient mystery in a comprehensible manner.
