Even though many sightings during these fifty years can be put down to optical illusions produced by refraction or the lionisation of the atmosphere, or to weather balloons or to globe lightning, not to mention mass hallucination or hoaxes perpetrated by people seeking to get their names in the newspapers, in many other cases documentary proof exists - supported by the testimony of qualified observers, radar traces and filmed records - that there is no logical explanation other than the hypothetical presence of objects coming from space. Out of this comes the theme "UFO, the reality behind the phenomenon : alien intervention ?" which is the basis for the 5th Inernational Symposium on Unidentified Flying Objects and associated Phenomena which is being held in San Marino from 6th to 8th June 1997 with the participation of researchers, scientists and eye-witnesses from all over the world, and which will be held alongside an international ufological photographic exhibition and other interesting activities.
